1. When Ends Meet, 2007

    by Mickalene Thomas

This is a set of two prints adorned with rhinestones. The legend herself, Oprah Winfrey, is covered with glitz and sparkle. The highest-rated talk show host in the history of television is paired with the first female African-American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, creating a powerful and unique mode of portraiture. Moreover, both Winfrey and Rice are given some pizzazz through the creativity of Mickalene Thomas, suggesting boldness and personality that would otherwise be unseen, as these influential public figures typically appear poised in their media portrayals. Thomas uses methods that are truly different, while challenging how we can admire and respect today’s popular female figures. -LINDSAY
